Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

The weather has warmed up considerably around here, and we’re all thinking lovely thoughts of spring. Captain Earthquake has been literally begging to run outside barefoot even though it’s still officially winter. In Michigan.

Dude.

I’ve been thrilling to the experience of going outside wearing my shoes instead of boots, and we’ve all been just loving the warm fresh air.

Speaking of fresh air (cue smooth segue here), I was contacted recently by Sara Wilson of the Fresh Air Fund asking if I would give her organization a mention here on the blog. Honestly, I’d never heard of the Fresh Air fund, so I went over and checked things out first. It turns out to be a pretty neat idea. Here’s their description of what they do:

THE FRESH AIR FUND, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Nearly 10,000 New York City children enjoy free Fresh Air Fund programs annually. In 2008, close to 5,000 children visited volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. 3,000 children also attended five Fresh Air camps on a 2,300-acre site in Fishkill, New York. The Fund’s year-round camping program serves an additional 2,000 young people each year.

I also took a peek at Charity Navigator, and Fresh Air is listed if you want to get more information.

How can you help? Well, donations are appreciated, and if you happen to live in the Northeastern US you could host a child this summer. You can find more information at the Fresh Air site.
