Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

I was blessed to receive a review copy of the In-Sync Activity Cards, a companion to the book Growing an In-Sync Child by Joye Newman and Carol Kranowitz. I haven’t read the book, but if it’s anything like the cards then you really might enjoy it! The cards are set up for children from pre-school on through elementary ages. Essentially, there are 50 cards set at 3 developmental levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each card has a specific game or activity that gets your child moving. On the back of the card are variations and advancements that you can use to make it more fun and challenging.

For example, the very first card has a came called Body Baton. You need a trampoline, a child, and an adult ready to have fun. Tell the child to get on the tramp and jump in rhythm to your clapping; you can clap slow or fast and change the beat as you will. Next, the child gets to be the conductor while you jump. Did I mention this program has a sneaky way of getting everyone to exercise?

The back of the card outlines what skills are being developed. In Body Baton it’s audotiry processing, vestibular processing, and proprioception. Each of those is explained in terms of why it’s helpful for the child. There’s a section that tells you what to look for to know if the skill has been mastered, and 3 suggestions for making the activity more challenging.

With 50 cards in the set, there is plenty of activity for everyone to have a lot of fun for a very long time. Parents and teachers could definitely use these cards to really help children develop some strong motor skills, which is SO important for learning.

Since my boys are too old for most of this, I plan to donate the cards to a preschool or family that can really use them. And I will strongly recommend they get the book as well. What a great idea! I wish I’d have had these when the boys were little. We certainly would have had a great time playing together, a skill that I definitely have needed to grow myself. 😉

FTC Disclosure: I was given a free set of In-Sync Activity cards and asked to review them for this post. The opinions are my own and honest, as I really think these are helpful to a child’s (and parent’s) development.
