Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

Sometimes it’s a lot of fun to just look back and think about some of the adventures children take us on. In this case, it’s my father-in-law’s adventure, but it’s a good one.

He was babysitting the older boys at the time. Well, they weren’t older, as we didn’t have the younger ones yet. They were just about 18 months old. Dad was probably 74 or 75 then. He was still quite able to get down on the floor and play with the boys, and handled them very well. Mom had gone somewhere and he was alone with them when The Mercenary had a dirty diaper. Dad laid him down on the floor for the change and had the diaper just off when TechnoBoy pulled on a floor lamp and conked himself right in the head.

In the ensuing freak-out (because what toddler doesn’t scream in the event of a lamp on his head?) Dad jumped up to address the situation.

You know what’s coming, right?

Yep. A now diaper-less but still dirty twin got up and started wandering. And yes, he left a streak mark or two in the process! Poor dad. Screaming kid and poop everywhere.

He managed to get it cleaned up though, and still tells the story to this day, laughing the whole way.

It’s a good memory.
