Usually, bug bites do little more than cause itching and discomfort to kids, but parents should always be aware that bites can trigger allergic reactions and infections. Below are five common bug bites, and recommended treatment for each.

Spider Bites

Spider bites can range from mild to severe, but the first step in treating one should be to clean the bite and apply ice to the infected area. For a mild bite, antihistamines may be used as treatment, but bites by venomous spiders such as the brown recluse and black widow are more serious and will require immediate medical attention, and sometimes hospitalization.

Bee Stings

Usually, bee stings result in localized reactions – that is, swelling and pain in the immediate area of the sting. In this case, the sting should be removed with tweezers, if it is still embedded in the skin. After that, the affected skin should be cleaned, and ice should be applied. In the event of an allergic reaction to the sting, emergency medical attention should be immediately sought.

Mosquito Bites

Normally, mosquito bites don’t cause much pain beyond itching, but the itching can be irritating, especially in the case of multiple bites. There are many anti-itch creams and ointments that can be purchased, and home remedies such as applying vinegar or salt water can reduce itching.

Tick Bites

Often, the first step to treating a tick bite is removing the tick itself. Use tweezers to grab the tick around its mouth, and not its body, then pull it gently off. Thoroughly wash the bite and apply an antibiotic ointment to soothe irritation.

Fly Bites

Fly bites can vary in the severity of the irritation they cause. As with most other insect bites, washing and applying ice to the bite is an appropriate immediate treatment. Anti-bite ointments containing ammonia may be effective in reducing pain and swelling. Keep an eye open for pus or growing redness, as this may be a sign of infection, in which case medical attention should be sought.

Bed Bug Bites

Bed Bugs are tiny blood-sucking insects that live in furniture or bedding. Experts such as Select Exterminating suggest removing these extremely pesky creatures. They leave multiple bites that cause redness and irritation. Bed Bug Bites are generally not dangerous, but they can be extremely itchy, so soothing ointments should be applied to affected areas.
