Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

One skill I’ve never really perfected (nor worked on) is drawing. The Mercenary can draw. He’s really pretty good. And Hubby is downright skilled. But me? I never progressed much past sketching or copying what others have done.

Which is fine, but it does make teaching kids to draw kind of difficult. I did pick up a doodle or two from a show on TV where the artist gives lessons. I liked that a lot. But things kind of ended there with the doodles.

You can Draw Bible Stories for Kids is written by Sandy Silverthorne, and I was given a review copy. I totally love this book! Sandy shows how sketcher/doodlers like me can make great cartoon illustrations using Bible stories as a foundation. I can see a lot of Sunday School teachers enjoying this book.

The book starts with an introductory chapter showing how to go from a stick figure to a more comprehensive one. It’s still cartoony, so there are no worries about getting the human figure just right. It’s much more fun. He also spends time on faces and hands.

Then you’re right into the stories. Beginning with Adam and Eve, there are 18 chapters detailing some of the more well-known Bible stories and how to draw them. The book is intended to be a workbook, with space for kids to draw right on the pages.

I’m so intending to use this for a class with our homeschool co-op group. I think kids of all ages will have a ball with it. I know I plan to go through it and really add to my own repertoire. Seems like pretty much all I can doodle now are stick figures and a cute loopy flower I learned in the 6th grade. When I’m done with this book I’ll be able to draw lots of animals (Creation and Noah’s Ark), people (Moses, Samson & Delilah) and places (Jericho, Bethlehem). Throw in a few boats (the ark, Jonah’s ship) too.

If you want the book, it’s available on Amazon (the picture is an affiliate link), and there’s much more to see at Sandy’s website: You Can Draw Bible Stories. There are even some demonstration videos to enjoy.!
