Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

Heroes, Mother’s Day is almost here (and yes, that’s a reminder for some of you. ahem). What are you doing to celebrate Mom? And moms, do you remember what life was like when you had a small baby? Oh, those nights! I’ll tell you a story about that shortly. But first: The good folks at Fisher Price made this adorable video, saying “Our Mother’s Day wish for you…and other Moms too! Forget sleepless nights-enjoy a relaxing, playful day! You’ve earned a day to celebrate being a mom!”

That one makes me smile, and reminds me of life with small babies 16 years ago. Eek. I can’t believe it’s been that long! Anyhow, one of the first parenting lessons Hubby and I learned was that Hubby should NOT be getting up at all hours of the night with babies. The man just isn’t wired to survive without a solid block of sleep.

I learned this lesson the night that I woke up to boys crying. Their crib was still in our room, so it wasn’t hard to miss the sound. It was Hubby’s turn to get up so I woke him up and tried to go back to sleep myself. He headed for the kitchen which was about 10 feet from our room.

Going back to sleep didn’t work. The crying turned to shrieking, as both boys were really sure that they were starving. This went on for 3 or 4 minutes. By the time the boys had reached DefCon 1, I was starting to wonder what on earth was taking the man so long. That’s when he stumbled back into the room and asked, “What was it I was doing?”

Yea. I sent him back to bed and fed the boys myself.

After that, we arranged it so he helped at certain times, but because I could handle shorter sleep cycles (and I had the option of naps during the day), I’d do the middle-of-the-night feedings. It was a much better system.

I do enjoy telling that story though. It makes me laugh as well.
