Well, the day has finally arrived: the first day back to school of the 2013-2014 year. I know, seems late, right? Someone saw wisdom in passing a law that Michigan public schools cannot begin until after Labor Day. So here we are. It works out all right, but does seem…late.
The good folks at Staples Canada were thinking a lot about school this summer, apparently, because they took the time to do a study on what smells trigger memories of school for adults. It may have been paper, pencils, books, or even cut grass, but there was something that did it for each group. I’ve been thinking deeply, and I’m not actually sure. I guess I usually think about the smell of the school itself. The smell of old concrete buildings reminds me of school. Go figure.

I just had this discussion with a few moms the other day. We also talked about the best elementary school lunches and mine was cheesy bread with dunker sauce (marinara). Whenever I smelt that meal, it reminded me of school and how everybody loved that meal and tried to get seconds.
Peyton, I never had anything quite so yummy for a school lunch! I do remember the cookies though. In high school I would go to swim practice in the morning, then go buy a bagel, orange juice, and 2 chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. The cookies were right out of the oven. Yummm.
